WHAT MAKES A GOOD MENTOR

by admin

Everyone can become a mentor but the most appreciated and outstanding trait that turns a mentor to a good mentor is being a good listener. They take a chance, stop talking and start listening, not to give feedback but to learn something from what their mentee is saying. They also create an open forum by asking open questions so as to stimulate and encourage their mentee to think, talk and come up with solutions.

A good mentor is not ” when I get time” rather creates time to meet and that just like any other job requires dedication and commitment. Mentoring requires energy to listen, engage and guide. The the focus is on the mentee to come up with solutions for themselves, a good mentor must put on effort help to help them achieve that. That means dealing with the obstacles that come along the way as someone is trying to think through a critical decision.

Good mentors take pleasure from seeing their mentees grow and develop. They are generous with not only with their praise but attention and time. A good mentor will do whatever it takes to see their mentees grow hence they will do so by not only words but also actions. They will offer resources and connections that will help their mentee, they also take pride in believing in their potential and do whatever it takes to help their mentee achieve it. Will congratulate their wins and help them bounce back from set backs.

Outstanding mentors share their experiences and knowledge willingly and with enthusiasm so as their mentee can learn from them. They will help their mentees identify gaps/ niche in their skills set and guide them on how to develop the skills they need to succeed.
Most of the people don’t prefer to hear the truth but an outstanding mentor will always be honest and deliver the feedback in a way that is precise and constructive.
