We live online now more than ever: from schooling, shopping, banking and even our social life. Our data is everywhere and in 2025 cyber threats have gotten smarter, faster and sneakier. Whether you are a student, freelancer, business owner protecting your data isn’t something debatable but essential. The following is a list of how you can stay one step ahead of cyber criminals without having a tech degree.
1. STRONG UNIQUE PASSWORD +/- PASSWORD MANAGER
It might sound basic but it’s shocking how people are still using the same password across multiple accounts. Use strong, complex and unique passwords for each account and store them safely using a password manager.
2. ENABLE TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION ( 2FA)
Adding a second layer of protection is a game changer such that even if a person gets your password it will stop them in their tracks. Always enable it in your banking, social media accounts and email. Authenticator apps like google authenticator are more secure than text based 2FA which are very vulnerable to sim swaps attacks.
3. KEEP YOUR SOFTWARES AND DEVICES UPDATED
Regularly update your operating system since cyber criminals mostly exploit outdated softwares. Be it your browser, apps and antivirus softwares. Turn on auto-update wherever possible.
4.SECURE YOUR WI-FI NETWORK
Your home wi-fi is the front door to your digital life. Make sure its locked tight with a strong password and encryption ( use WAP3 if available). Change the default user settings immediately including the admin username and password.
Never use public WI-FI for sensitive activities like online banking unless you are using a secure VPN
5.Back up your data regularly both online and offline to avoid losing all your data incase of an attack
Cyber attacks aren’t going anywhere, instead they are evolving but with the right habits and tools you can reduce the risks of attacks and keep your data safe. These steps don’t just protect your information but also your peace of mind.
